Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend passed through the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
