Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Consider this a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like typical biological terror, but beneath Together exists a profound contemplation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for over ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a particular energy to their characters, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The narrative starts when the couple relocate from the big city to the rural area for Millie’s job. A commonly used story element, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the conventions end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The entire film is a slow burn horror experience, blending moments of dreamlike terrors, gross (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of completely losing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he can’t drive and needs Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together avoids making either of his characters the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie confront the sort of issues that arise in long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these anxieties of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor does not come across as overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a compelling reason for staying single. On the other hand, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the finale inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply look at your other half and utter, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can undertake today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
