RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several approach shafts down to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their valour," Healey added. "Including them were a great many British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out militants who pose a risk to our security, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
